Jackie Weger says: What I know about Facebook is limited.  Over the past months I’ve learned a bit–how to upload a banner and how to post a book so the cover isn’t cut in half.  Just when I thought I was getting the hang of it–Facebook changed. This is not a rant, but right this minute I am vexed. Here’s why: There is author XXX moving at nano speed  like  a headless cyberchicken posting her title on Facebook sites and she has been doing so for weeks!  You know how when you are on Facebook those little notices pop up on the bottom left of your screen? This  author hits so many FB pages that in less than two minutes my lower left sidebar is jammed–five inches of  the same posting.  That is beyond discourteous. This goes on for hours.  Author XXX hits ten or more FB pages, then goes right back to the first one and starts again. That keeps her posts above every one else’s.

Every Facebook page/site we join has rules and courtesies the administrator asks members to follow. Once you are approved to join a group, you say Thank You to the administrator and if you are savvy, you use the administrator’s name. It is usually in a pinned post. You comment on other author postings before you post your own book or promotion. It does not have to be much, something  to the effect that a blurb is wonderful, or the cover captures the essence of the book. I very often will tick on a book link to Amazon, see how many reviews a book has and pop right back and comment on superb reviews. Without fail, every time I have commented on a review or a cover, the author messages me a thank you. That’s nice.

We post our books on Facebook sites in hope of sales.  Here’s the skinny–most sites are top heavy with authors. Even the gigantic sites boasting 12-18,000 followers will have fewer readers than authors. Posting on Facebook is exposure more than sales, but readers do lurk. Over the course of a six day 99¢ book promo I see less than twenty-five book sales from Facebook

postings. I appreciate the buys. FREE books is a whole other matter–and you will see downloads when you post FREE on Facebook.  Authors like FREE books, too. The only Facebooks sites that actually sell books are those that charge a small fee because they’ve build up a following of readers. You cannot post your book on those sites with one exception, and that is EBook Korner Cafe.

Author XXX touts herself as an Amazon TOP 100 Best Seller in her bio.  Author XXX left out one tiny word: FREE. I checked. May the indie gods bless KND EBook Tracker. I have two titles that reached the #1 Amazon Top slot in FREE and stayed there until the promo was closed. You ain’t a Best Seller unless you sell those suckers. FREE don’t count. I have sold a few million books over my thirty-year career, but I am not an Amazon best selling author. I sell books, but I ain’t a best selling author in the exacting sense of that word. Okay. I’m being picky. Shoot me.

Author XXX is a fine  writer. Her reviews are great. She writes the kinds of books I buy. But I ain’t buying hers. I’d read toilet paper first and then use it. I have a list of 150 Facebook sites. I use them sparingly. I drop in now and then between promos, say hello, look at books.  That’s courtesy. The reason I’ve been in so many FB sites recently is I’ve been posting about eNoveller’s books and promos, my 99¢ promo, First Chapters and comments that might drive readers and lurkers to eNovel Authors at Work.

Here is a protocol tip: Post your book on your Facebook page and pin it to the top. I visited some FB pages this week and there was nothing about the author’s books or links to buy pages. If you have more than one book, vary the pinned post.

Don’t forget to use our hashtag in your TWEETs. #eNovAaW.  Register for HootSuite. You can put #eNovAaW in the search window, then tick ADD Stream and have all of our tweets in the stream–so easy then to retweet.

    I have had disappointing experiences with FB postings also and I am sure you are right about the author dominated composition. I am searching for better methods of getting the word out.

  3. Nothing turns people off–family, friends, or fellow authors alike–than being spammed on Facebook or other social media sites. Authors need to use discretion when we post, especially with regard to our own books. I do not want to become persona non grata anywhere I visit or risk losing followers! And, using Bitly helps make our links neater to post and easier to follow.

    Hi Jackie

    I don’t understand Facebook much at all. However, what I can tell you is that the last two sets of websites that became very big in free books was via Facebook.

    eReaderNewToday and Pixel of Ink becamse very big in 2012 via Facebook.
    In 2012 and 2013 Bookbub built up mainly via Facebook and Facebook Ads.

    So the readers are there. Just not sure how to reach them.

    • The changes Fb has made to promoting pages hasn’t helped. Back when those sites did so well, a website with a great following could garner likes and spread the word via Fb fans and the growth was exponential…but now we have to pay to get a post seen by everyone (which most Indies can’t afford) Facebook is a less reliable marketing plan. The temptation is to use groups instead but that leads to all the thing Jackie lists as annoying. 🙁

      Abhi: Authors can not post on those sites you mention. One has to submit a title via Pixel of Ink, eReader News Today and Bookbub. Still do. The administrators post those books they have accepted or selected. The reach for those sites are phenomenal. Once our book is on the FB page, we can comment. Say thank you, and I think share. That’s it. The FB sales venue just adds to the promoter’s reach. And all of the books have the site’s associate’s codes. Thus–book buyers can flock to those sites w/o actually subscribing to the newsletters. All other FB pages are top-heavy with authors. Actually almost every register member is an author. Readers don’t need to register to peruse or lurk or tick a book link–and they seldom do.

    I have to add that you should only use Bit.ly links on Facebook and not on book submission sites. Reason for this is most smart book submission sites will not allow bit.ly links as they can be changed. Let me explain a bit further. When I first started Awesomegang we had people submit their books using bit.ly links. A few days later I clicked on the link and it was a porn site with a million pop ups. The user changed the landing page in bit.ly after they submitted to us. This got us hurt in the Google search results since we were now pushing porn. I immediately instituted a no bit.ly link policy. Books submitted to our site rejects them as does a few other sites. Just wanted to make a note of that 🙂

      Wow! Vinny. That was an awful experience. Very few promo sites allow bitly. Mostly because they just want the ASIN so they can pop in their Amazon Associate code. It is only pennies, but it helps offset site maintenance. I’m good with that. Jeff Bezos gets his share. We get ours.   8. This promotional business is beyond daunting. Which sites to use, which not. Which sites are a total waste of time and money. Thanks, Jackie (and everyone who comments), for your words of wisdom.

      Sharon: One of the reasons it is difficult to know the best place for a return on our promo dollar is few sites are transparent. ENT charges according to the number of books sold. So we know how effective it is. Book Sends also tells an author if downloads exceed the cost of the promo. That is smart. They don’t tell all–but they do figure if the author has made an ROI and let the author know. Both will get my promo $$$. I’m upset with Storyfinds right now because Rene Fields offers to promote a title on Free for no charge. That helps to build her readership. But then Dani sent me an email asking for a donation up to $25. That is not smart. Either the spot is free or not. Rene charges $40-$50 for an author spotlight. I don’t advocate paying for Author Spotlights. We are done with that. Storyfinds does not have a U.S Alexa rating because it is under 100,000. By Comparison, eNovel Authors at Work has an Alexa rating of 50,012 in the U.S. We get more traffic. So! Tweet and Fb your author page on eNovel for exposure! It’s always free. Not only that, but Alexa says visitors are spending 15 minutes or more on our site and reading not less than six pages. That is awesome.

    I find my own promo overwhelming, let alone dealing with others over-promotion. So much promo with so little results. I could be writing instead…

      Well…Julie! Promotion and selling books is what eNovel Authors at Work is about. We pay-it-forward. There is such a thing as discourtesy–but when a book is in promotion there is no such thing as “over promotion.” I am promoting your newest book right now in First Chapters. All of us are.
